Prepared to Care Curriculum

Designed by Jana Marie Foundation, with support from Juniata Valley Council, BSA and AutumnSpring Counseling, Prepared to Care teaches Scouts how tenets of the Scout Oath and Law can be used to help promote positive mental health by noticing warning signs in their peers and connecting them with a trusted adult.

Guided by seven requirements, Scouts will complete activities to learn about mental health, including how to access mental health resources and be a supportve friend. Requirements:

  1. Define Mental Health and discuss why it’s important
  2. Reflect on how Scouting promotes positive mental health and determine two ways to enhnace mental health at a local unit level
  3. Identify changes in thoughts, behaviors, actions, and appearances that suggest someone may be experiencing a mental health concern
  4. Utilize the SCOUT acronym and practice how to start a conversation about mental health
  5. Understand and identify potential warning signs of a mental health crisis
  6. Identify local and national resources to assist with a mental health concern or crisis
  7. Reflect on how the Scout Oath can encourage us to take care of ourselves so we can be a supportive friend

This curriculum is designed for youth registered in Scouts BSA and Venturing.
